Prepare authority and evidence access
Cloud incidents can involve identity, control-plane changes, workload activity and provider-managed services at the same time. Define who may inspect, isolate, rotate credentials and restore services. Maintain emergency access that does not depend entirely on the affected identity or network path.
Enable administrative, identity, network and workload evidence before it is needed. Centralise important records in a protected account or project, define retention and monitor source health. Document provider-specific delays and fields so responders understand what a missing event does and does not prove.
Design containment that preserves options
Create tested patterns for disabling a key, isolating a workload, restricting a network path and blocking public access without deleting the resource. Tags, quarantine groups and pre-approved policies can reduce improvisation, but responders still need authority and a rollback path.
Snapshot or preserve relevant state before destructive change where safe and appropriate. Record the exact time, actor and reason for each action. Coordinate containment across identity and automation so a pipeline or infrastructure template does not immediately recreate the exposed condition.
Recover the service, not only the resource
Recovery requires known-good identities, configuration, code, data, keys and dependencies. Practise rebuilding into a controlled environment and verify that the original attack path is removed before reconnecting traffic. Provider availability does not replace application recovery design.
After an exercise or incident, update playbooks, architecture and detection. Measure evidence availability, time to establish scope, time to revoke access and time to deliver a verified service. Close actions only after the improved path is tested.
What to do next.
- ✓Name cloud incident authorities and alternates.
- ✓Protect central logs from ordinary workload administration.
- ✓Prepare reversible isolation and credential-revocation patterns.
- ✓Coordinate containment with deployment automation.
- ✓Test rebuilds with identity, keys and dependencies.
- ✓Re-exercise every material improvement.
Use guidance responsibly
Technology, provider behaviour and legal requirements change. Validate implementation details against current official documentation, test changes safely and obtain qualified legal advice where required.
